My problem however, like Soooooo many others was that in the 5 years of waiting for a “good” race sim. We’d all upgraded to Windows XP. To our disbelief, Saitek weren’t going to offer support for the new operating system.

Fortunately however I stumbled across a post in the Saitek forum regarding the R4. XYR a person on the forum posted a mod to change the hardware ID for the R4 into a Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel and XP could recognize it.

Figuring I had nothing to loose. I did the mod and it worked. WOOHOO!

For a while, this was enough. I could use the wheel again with full force feedback support. I was happy. Life was good.

But something wasn’t right. The MS wheel had 8 buttons and my R4 only had 6. I heard the 2 wheels were almost identical but I couldn’t prove it?

That was until I managed to get my hands on another Microsoft wheel.

2 Days and lots of thinking achieved a result that YES we can install 2 extra buttons. And I did.
